Hot Moves

*EL ROLLO: The maneuver probably most synonymous with bodyboarding, it was invented independently by a few riders in the '70's including Mike Stewart and Pat Caldwell, and the term was probably first heard in Endless Summer when Corky Carroll inadvertently does one on a longboard proning a wave at Malibu.
It consists of a riding the lip upside down and around like a corkscrew roller coaster landing back on the wave. Variations include the BARREL ROLL done in the tube, the AIR ROLL which speaks for itself, the THROUGH-THE-LIP ROLL where the rider can punch through the roof of a closeout and roll out in front of the wave. *AERIAL: This move involves bottom-turning on the wave, and going up to the lip where the rider flies up and out of the wave into the air, projecting themself back down onto the wave and continues riding.

*SPIN or 360: The most basic move, it can be done forward or reverse, in the air, off the lip, in the tube, or upside down. There's also the cutback into the spin. Click here to see how it's done
Some riders are now doing 720's in the air.

*DROPKNEE: First introduced by the legendary Jack "The Ripper" Lindholm at Pipe in the '70's, it's basically a surfing-like approach to bodyboarding where the rider stands goofy or regular foot with the front foot on the deck of the board, and the the back shin on the back half of the board....sort of half-standing. The moves are similar to surfing- cutbacks, snaps, floaters, airs, etc. but a lack of skeg underneath allows extra freedom. Click here to see how it's done

*INVERT: This is an aerial where the rider tweaks upside down at the height of the move and brings it back before landing.

*A.R.S: This is a combo move first introduced by Aussie Mike Eppelstun. It starts as an AIR ROLL, and when the rider is upside down in the roll, they go into a SPIN completing the vertical and horizontal spin/roll combo all in one move before landing. Click here to see how it's done.

*BACKFLIP: Also started by Mike Eppelstun, the rider hits the lip with maximum speed projecting out away from the wave upside down doing the equivalent of loop, landing facing backward toward the wave. Hard, blind landings put this move at the high end of the difficulty/consequence scale.

*GYROLL: Invented by Mike Stewart, it's a bizarre combination of a ROLLO followed by a FORWARD FLIP as the rider comes out of the rollo.

*HUBB: Hawaii's Jeff Hubbard came up with this one. It's an AIR SPIN into a ROLL all done in the air before landing back on the wave.

*DOUBLE ROLL: Another one developed by Mike Eppelstun (and others), it's two ROLLS in the air before landing back on the wave. You need to get really launched to have time to complete both rolls.

There are many other moves and variations of the above moves, but these are the most popular.
