Swimfin Buyers Guide & Size Chart
1. Which size swimfins should I get?
Swimfins can fit a little differently on everyone, especially if you wear fin socks or booties. Our swimfins are sized in U.S. men's shoe sizes.
If you wear women's sizes, use the chart below to find the approximate equivalent in men's sizing. In general, U.S. women's sizes convert to men's by subtracting about 1.5 sizes. [Example: women's 7.5 ≈ men's 6.]
If you're between sizes or plan to wear socks or booties, you may want a little extra room, since fin socks and booties can affect fit.
| Men's Swimfin Size | Women's Shoe Size Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 3.5 | 5 |
| 4.5 | 6 |
| 5.5 | 7 |
| 6.5 | 8 |
| 7.5 | 9 |
| 8.5 | 10 |
| 9.5 | 11 |
| 10.5 | 12 |
2. Foot Shape / Fit Type Guide
Not all swimfins fit the same, and that's totally normal. The best fit really depends on your foot shape. If you have a high instep, wide feet, flat feet, or usually wear a wide shoe like 2E or 4E, some fins will feel way better than others. Here's a quick guide to help:
- Wide feet / high instep: MS Vipers, Tribe T1, H2O Smoke, Hydro Fins, DMC Repellor, Yucca
- Narrow feet: Duckfeet, T2 Swimfins
- Kids / beginners: Tribe T2, DaFin, Hydro
- Dropknee riders: Dubb Zero, Kicks
-
Lifeguards & Junior Guards: DaFin, MS Vipers, Tribe T2 Swimfins, Tribe T1 Swimfins
- Swimming: Tech 2, DMC Repellor
If you're not sure which pair is best for your feet, reach out to us. We're happy to help point you in the right direction.
3. Blade Stiffness Explanation
You may notice that some swimfin brands talk about "flex." That simply refers to how soft or stiff the fin blade feels in the water.
- Soft blade: Easier on your legs and great for beginners or longer sessions
- Medium blade: A good all-around choice and the most common flex
- Stiff blade: Delivers maximum power and is best for experienced riders
If you're not sure which flex is right for you, think about your experience level, leg strength, and how long you usually stay in the water.
4. Fin sock / bootie adjustments
Wearing a fin sock, flipper slipper, or bootie will definitely change how your swimfins fit. They can make your fins more comfortable, help prevent chafing and blisters, and add warmth when you need it.
Here's a simple guide to how much extra size they usually add:
- 2mm fin socks: Add about 1 shoe size
- 3mm fin booties (like our Heat Feet): Add about 2 shoe sizes
- 5mm fin booties: Add about 2.5 shoe sizes
- 7mm fin booties: Add about 3 shoe sizes
- 3mm hard-soled booties: Add about 3.5 shoe sizes
- 5-7mm hard-soled booties: Add about 4 shoe sizes
If you plan to wear socks or booties with your fins, be sure to factor that in when choosing your size.

5. FAQ
A short Q&A that addresses the most common swimfin questions:
- Should I size up or down if I'm between sizes? It's usually best to go up in size. A fin that is too tight can cause cramping and make your session less enjoyable. You can always fine-tune a slightly bigger fit with a fin sock, heel pad, or cinch.
- Do fins stretch over time? Not really, although your feet may move around a little more once you're in the water.
- What fins work best with booties? A wider fin is usually best with thicker socks or booties. Be sure to size up based on thickness. Hard-sole booties generally do not work well in swimfins.
- Are swimfin sizes the same as shoe sizes? No. A ML in one fin does not mean you'll be a ML in another. Sizing varies by brand and model.
- Can I wear closed-heel swimfins? No. In waves, they can get sucked off your feet and they trap sand. An open heel-strap design is the better choice.
6. Care & Maintenance Tips
Want your swimfins to last longer? Give them a quick rinse in fresh water after each surf, keep them out of direct sunlight when storing them, and use a rubber protectant now and then to help keep them in great shape.
7. Staff Picks
Want a real-world fit reference? Here's what our crew wears:
- Jay has a 4E wide foot and wears a men's 10.5 shoe. He uses the Tribe T1 in size L and says they fit perfectly. He usually goes without socks, but bumps up to an XL if he's wearing 3mm or 5mm Heat Feet.
- Vicki wears a women's 7.5 and uses the Tribe T2 in MS with a cinch sock. She can wear a 3mm Heat Feet Bootie with that size, but goes up to a Medium with 5mm Heat Feet.
- Josh has a wider foot and wears a 10.5. He loves the MS Vipers with the Gyroll Finsert and Gyroll Connector.
- Alex wears an 11.5 and has an average-width foot. He rides an XL Soft Flex Yucca Swimfin and also wears a cinch sock to keep them snug.
